Style + Story

Style and Story are my two favorite attributes of a session. It’s what I get most excited about!

When it comes to styling your session, I am all hands on deck. One of my favorite hobbies is to shop on Instagram, scouring accounts for the prettiest and most unique dresses I can find. But not every dress is the right one just because its pretty. Your outfit tells a story . . . your story. It’s a visual representation of you and your personality. So when you decide to book a session with me, invest in an amazing dress and wardrobe for your family. You are already investing in these photos, and your wardrobe is just as much a part of making them amazing as showing up and being present with your family. Also, think of me as your personal assistant in this process! I have so much expertise in color theory and storytelling. Locations are chosen based on your families personalities, and then wardrobe colors and style are chosen based on the colors at that location. Your personalities paired with location and wardrobe, is how your beautiful story unfolds. And I get to be the lucky one to discover it and capture it.

For this session the story was simple, a picnic at the park. From there I put together activities I knew little man would love and dad could bond with him. I knew mom’s story right now was wrapped up in her brand new bundle of joy. So I scoured the internet for a rocking cradle that I thought would be the perfect place to set the baby down to sleep in.

Since the story was picnic-at-the-park, that meant it was more casual. So we went with a mustard yellow dress for mom. Growing up, mustard yellow was the farthest thing from my favorite color, but it truly photographs so beautifully. It is the only yellow you should ever wear for photos. It has a sort of golden look to it which mimics the color of the sun as we near sunset. Generally speaking, the safest colors are neutrals and earth tones. But don’t worry, I’ll help you figure out what colors will be best for your session.

Dad wore a henley shirt. It’s basically a t shirt with 3 buttons at the top. This is my go to shirt for dad’s. It can be long sleeve or short sleeve. They are comfortable, easy to find, and inexpensive. Something about those 3 buttons dress it up just enough for family photos. We went with a neutral color of light grey. Another consideration is contrast. Since dad wore dark blue shorts, we needed a lighter top for some contrast.

For little man, we went shirtless with suspender jeans. This is such a classic look and is honestly my fav for little boys. I love to tell a more wild story. Something more casual and carefree. And for that, shirtless with suspender pants tells the story of a little boy just perfectly. Cuz let’s face it, little boys are a bit on the wild side.
